I made this EP quickly. I was working on an album, getting bogged down in the details of recording, overthinking and second-guessing every little choice. I needed a break, and I wanted to make something with a strict deadline and clear creative boundaries. I gave myself a month to write, record, and mix this project.
To record it, I decided to use Garageband, which is a consumer grade digital audio workstation. I used one electric guitar, with a chipped nut and ancient strings. I used my Martin acoustic guitar. I used a cheap Squire bass with mile-high action, one microphone, and the MIDI instruments found in Garageband.
A common assumption is that creativity flourishes when you give yourself unfettered access to the highest quality tools — sounds, software, gear, studio time, and so on. While those things are really great and often yield strong results, I had fun working by myself, making the most out of what I had. It felt like a gratitude exercise, and that was my goal with this EP. I'm happy with how it turned out.
Now, time to finish an album.
Thank you all for listening. Please enjoy Private Time.
